Tell us about your business.

Tree of Life is a herbal health shop. We sell herbal teas, herbal health supplements, superfoods, natural cosmetics, essential oils and herbal soaps. All our products are made in Ghana. All our products are ready to use and made with raw high quality ingredients, all sourced here in Ghana.

What motivated and inspired you to start your own business?

As a mother of 4, I really care about giving my children the best.
I was very concerned about the chemical ingredients you find in mainstream cosmetics and medicines, so I started making herbal teas and other products for me and my family, to keep us all as healthy as possible. We have been travelling a lot, it was easier to make those products myself.

Tree of Life is the african baobab, it is also the life provider in a biblical setting.

I realized it I could share my recipes with other mothers who share my sentiments, that’s why I started this as a business.

I really enjoy making herbal preparations. I love my job! I love producing these colourful products, they always smell amazing 🙂 I want to share this love!

Are you currently running any promos/contests/giveaways that you would like our readers to know about?

We will offer a free small coconut oil to all Urban Dollz readers when they make a purchase, in August and September 2017.

List awards/certifications/accomplishments.

What were the first few steps you took to get your business up and running?

I went on the craft markets, to meet customers and sell the products I made in my kitchen,to know them better and to understand their needs.

Our very first market stand 😊

What has been the most effective way of raising awareness of your business and getting new customers?

I find the best way is the word of mouth. When someone is happy with his purchase, they share it with their family and friends. Social media is very good to spread the word too.

What have been your biggest challenges so far?

Finding some reliable suppliers for the raw ingredients we use. We only use the best quality available and want our suppliers to provide us with the best each and every time.

Learning the skills to run a company, I had graphics skills and herbal knowledge, but accounting and managing skills were hard to learn… especially accounting. I am still learning every day.

How did you overcome these challenges?

Testing and updating. Always look for a better supplier.
Learning 🙂 I am lucky, I love to study.

As a mother of 4 how do you balance work and family demands?

I often work at night when everybody is sleeping.
My children enjoy coming to work with me. I hope I will inspire them to live their dreams.

How do you keep motivated through difficult times?

I look back at what I have already done and I feel very proud. It is 100% handmade. I designed the logo, the labels, made the recipes,… it would be a shame to give up!

How do you distinguish yourself from your competitors?

We have a strong quality control, and total transparency. I have decided to comply to the highest standards to produce some high quality items. What is on the label is what you get. No hidden or low quality ingredients. If some fragrance is added, we write it in the ingredients list.  High quality always! Consistently…
Also we do real aromatherapy using high quality essential oils with their medicinal properties.
