Tell us about your business.

Skin Gourmet Limited, a Ghanaian innovation that creates premium and edible body care products sourced from the Wilds in Ghana.

Our products are processed  by older women in the rural areas of Northern Ghana using techniques that has been passed down from generation to generation by our ancient ancestors. There is no machinery used in the production of our products. The raw materials are processed slowly by hand and by manufacturing this way, we are able to provide sustainable jobs and push funds into communities who would have otherwise had great difficulty in finding employment due to their lack of western education and exposure. Skin Gourmet currently  provides employment and livelihood to many rural communities in Northern Region.

What motivated and inspired you to start your own business?

We created Skin Gourmet almost 3 years ago, (9th October, 2014) when we realized there was need for unadulterated high quality body care products that was safe for human consumption. In other words, the rawest, purest and wildest skin care sourced from the heart of the West African forest.

We created Skin Gourmet to help the Ghanaian economy by pushing exports of high quality made in Ghana products. This is our way of giving back to our country, creating sustainable jobs and helping build a premium made in Ghana brand..It about all of us or none of us.

What were the first few steps you took to get your business up and running?

Well … I just started.  I am doer, a dreamer and very impulsive.

What is the most effective way of raising awareness for your brand  and getting new customers?

The best way to raise awareness  is to let your product speak for itself. We believe in quality, quality, quality!

ASkin Gourmet we deal in the rawest & purest of raw materials from the wild, while supporting the locals of the community, so we understand the importance of preservation and sustainability.

Getting customers goes hand in hand with creating good quality products. If the product speak for itself the customers will come back.

What has been the biggest challenge?

Operating in Ghana is very difficult. You get minimal support from the government and instead they give you huge hurdles. As an organization that has no loans and investors (we started with GHS 145.00) we have had very little support from any external persons. My biggest supporters were my parents, who invested their time and knowledge to brining the company this far.

How did you overcome these challenges?

Day by day, prayer by prayer, we overcome our challenges. I am blessed with a great support network from my parents and my close friends. They help us a lot and because of their strength, advice and selfless support we have been able to come this far.

How do you keep motivated?

I am motivated by our vision to preserve the Ghanaian way of creating & using skin care that is sourced from the wild sustainably. 100% made in Ghana for the modern Ghanaian and persons anywhere in the world, trying to live a healthy life in a world full of toxins.

Secondly, we are creating jobs out of our priceless tradition without asking for a trade-off. It is my desire that Skin Gourmet lives long past than I  do,  so that it can continue to provide for others as well as represent Ghana on the global market as a beacon of quality: the premium African skin care brand. Skin Gourmet is bigger than me, it is bigger than us, it must survive for generations to come & provide for others.

How do we distinguish ourselves from competitors?

The trick is to DIFFERENTIATE not to DUPLICATE.  We know our brand is nothing like what the competitors are offering – Skin Gourmet  is a locally sourced, wild, pure & healthy. It is a premium skin care brand for the modern Ghanaian.

We do not harvest our raw materials from farms. Rather we  gather and collect everything  from the wilds of Ghana deep in the forest.  We also do not harvest using machines or anything fancy. We do it all by hand!

“Good better best. May I never rest. Until my good is better and my better best.”

What is the best advice you have received recently?

“ Gillian Slater: Many businesses will rise and many will fall. One tip – it is all about your customer service. People have options but service is what will keep them coming back to you,  because the service is part of the product. “

What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs?

“ Put God first and the rest shall follow. “

What are your favorite business tools/resources and why?

My father, Prince Kofi Amoabeng is my favorite business resource. He is a successful business man, has achieved  and seen a lot and very few people have the privilege of having such a distinguished mentor. Plus he is my daddy so he loves me so he tells it like it is.

What is a good article or book you have read recently?

“ The Shack “ By William P Young – A MUST READ!
