Every body wants to have long beautiful hair, but if your hair breaks all the time how would you retain its length? In my previous post Why is my hair soo dry! I explained how dry scalp contributes to dry hair. In this article I would be looking at external factors and habits that cause dry hair leading to breakages.
The abuse of heat is bad for your hair.
Blow dryers, flat irons, curling irons and hot rollers might help in making your hair look amazing but they might be the very reason your hair is dry. High temperatures strips the hair from its natural moisture, especially in the case of irons and rollers which come in direct contact with dry hair, and this inadvertently leads to loss of hydration from the hair if proper precautions are not taken.
Before I transitioned to #team_natural, I was a heat freak. I used heat all the time, every morning before I went out, I would straighten my hair and do all sorts of styles to it because my hair was permed. I didn’t understand then the damage I was causing my hair until it started breaking.
What if HEAT is still Bae?
I will not lie, some habits are hard to get rid off, others are just like knowing the amount of calories in a double cheese burger but we decide to have it anyway. The same thing can be said about heat and our hair, so for you lovers of heat, you can do the following to protect your hair from dehydration.
- Use a thermal protective formula before applying heat.
- Consider using ionic thermal tools.
- Dial down the temperature.
If you are in a hair crisis, I suggest you take a break from heat and pamper your hair to other options of hair treatment. Experiment a little. Try different hairstyles that do not require rigorous procedures like braids, buns and weaves. These do not require heat styling and will give your dry hair a rest from moisture-hating thermal tools!
ENEMIES OF YOUR HAIR: OVER-WASHING AND UNDER-CONDITIONING
The frequent use of shampoo can strip away the hair of its natural oils leaving it dry and prone to breakages. On the other hand, conditioning and deep conditioning the hair on a regular basis can boost moisture content in the hair, leaving it soft and strong.
- Find a shampoo that is designed for dry hair and works for you.
- Skip the daily shampoo.
- And condition your dry hair on the “off” days
Exposing Your Hair to Too Much Sun, Wind, Chlorine, Saltwater can cause your hair to be dry.
Considering the fact that I live at close the equator and it is constantly hot in Ghana I am not surprised that I
have dry hair almost all the time. UV rays, harsh or dry conditions and swimming in pools or the ocean can all strip dry hair of precious moisture. To prevent that from hapening you can…
Step up your conditioning routine in the warmer days:
Switch to a richer conditioner in hot months and add a weekly deep conditioning treatment to your hair care routine.
Wear a cute hat or scarf over your hair:
Not only does the UV rays of the sun cause dry hair, it can also cause hair color to fade too quickly! Wearing a protective layer over your hair can keep your hair healthy. If you are going to be in the sun with your hair exposed, look for leave-in sprays that offer UV protection.
Waterproof your dry hair:
Before taking the plunge into the pool or the sea, coat your hair with a thick conditioning cream or treatment oil, and cover it with a swim cap.
Bad Brushes and Bad Brushing Can Cause Dry Hair
Never brush your hair when it’s wet. Wet hair is delicate and vulnerable and can easily be torn or broken with the bristles of a hairbrush .Using a wide tooth comb start at the bottom and gently work your way up to the top to detangle. Treat wet hair to a leave-in conditioner or detangler to help smooth the way.
Abuses of Chemical Treatments Can Cause Dry Hair
Haircolor and highlights–as well as relaxers, perms and chemical smoothers–can all cause healthy hair to become dry hair.Consider using Ammonia-free Hair Color, talk to your stylist about your haircolor options, ammonia-free permanent and demi-permanent formulas, for example, are gentler and better for dry hair.
Explore non-chemical options for straightening your hair: Today, there are many excellent smoothing formulas that can be applied before you style your hair that will prevent frizz and flyaways and add moisture to your dry hair.
