External factors and habbits that cause dry hair

Every body wants to have long beautiful hair, but if your hair breaks all the time how would you retain its length? In my previous post Why is my hair soo dry!  I explained how dry scalp contributes to dry hair. In this article I would be looking at external factors and habits that cause dry hair leading to breakages.

The abuse of heat is bad for your hair.

Blow dryers, flat irons, curling irons and hot rollers might help in making your hair look amazing but they might be the very reason your hair is dry. High temperatures strips the hair from its natural moisture, especially in the case of irons and rollers which come in direct contact with dry hair, and this  inadvertently leads to loss of hydration from the hair if proper precautions are not taken.

Before I transitioned  to #team_natural, I was a heat freak. I used heat all the time, every morning before I went out, I would straighten my hair and do all sorts of styles to it because my hair was permed. I didn’t understand then the damage I was causing my hair until it started breaking.

What if HEAT is still Bae?

I will not lie, some habits are hard to get rid off, others are just like knowing the amount of calories in a double cheese burger but we decide to have it anyway. The same thing can be said about heat and our hair, so for you lovers of heat, you can do the following to protect your hair from dehydration.

  • Use a thermal protective formula before applying heat.
  • Consider using ionic thermal tools.
  • Dial down the temperature.

If you are in a hair crisis, I suggest you take a break from heat and pamper your hair to other options of hair treatment. Experiment a little. Try different hairstyles that do not require rigorous procedures like braids, buns and weaves. These do not require heat styling and will give your dry hair a rest from moisture-hating thermal tools!

have dry hair almost all the time. UV rays, harsh or dry conditions and swimming in pools or the ocean can all strip dry hair of precious moisture. To prevent that from hapening you can…

Step up your conditioning routine in the warmer days:

Switch to a richer conditioner in hot months and add a weekly deep conditioning treatment to your hair care routine.

Wear a cute hat or scarf over your hair:

Not only does the UV rays of the sun  cause dry hair, it can also cause  hair color to fade too quickly! Wearing a protective layer over your hair can keep your hair healthy. If you are going to be in the sun with your hair exposed, look for leave-in sprays that offer UV protection.

Waterproof your dry hair:

Before taking the plunge into the pool or the sea, coat your hair with a thick conditioning cream or treatment oil, and cover it with a swim cap.
